"Cannot detect any hard drives on this computer"

a customer of mine brought a acer aspire one to me to have the system cleaned up.  The system will boot fine from the hard disk, but when I try to re-install the os system it will go through the steps of loading from the install disk, but then it claims that there is no hard disks that can be found on the computer..  Why is it that it will boot up fine from the hard disk but windows install will not detect a hard disk and how do I resolve this issue?
