Expanding the partition on an Exchange Server

Hi,

I currently have a server running Exchange 2003 Enterprise with a store of 72GB, the c partition is only 98GB and is becoming close to being full. I have a second partition on the server which is 102GB and has only 5GB of used space.

Is it possible to extend the c partition, and if so what is the best recommended tool for the job?

Many thanks in advance.

I have considered that, but the second partition will also fill up quickly. I have advised the users to archive and to not use Outlook as a filling system, but to no avail.

I have considered implementing a Netgear NAS solution onto the network, could i move the exchange database to here? and if so would it affect performance?

Exchange won't let you move the store to a NAS box - needs to be a local disk.
You could move the 5gb of data from the second partition to the first, then delete the second partition and extend the first partition with diskpart (built it and extremely free!).

Is the Netgear NAS an Etehrnet solution?  If so it shluld not affect it greatly.  How large is your database? Are your drives mirrored or in any RAID?  Is it possible for your to bring up a new server and them migrate the database over?

The NAS has full AD integration and is an ethernet solution. My ideal would be to replace the server as it is 4yrs old and migrate the DB across (65GB). The server is in a RAID 5 configuration.

Well I am learning new stuff again today!  Thanks Bazza82.
Reading that the database should be fine on a NAS box, but keeps the logs on the server.

I would suggest you to implement the mailbox limits to restrict the DB growing further. Also you can check the 1221 event from server application log and see if you have considerable amount of whitespace in DB to reclaim.

For setting mailbox limits refer the following article.

I am running Exchange Enterprise for this reason, so that the store will not dismount when hitting the limit. A decision taken 3 1?2 yrs ago for that exact reason.

There is no particlular tool you have to use however if the C: partition is only 98 GB & if the store is located on C: partition then you have only 26 GB free space.

If you have a second partition with 102 GB then you can move the store of 72 GB from C: partition to second partition.

Create a folder & name it logs in the second partition
Create a folder & name it as store in second partition

Method 1
=======
Stop the Exchange Information Store service from the services console (services.msc)

To move the logs using the Exchange System Manager
=>Right click the storage group which contains the store=>properties =>Use browse button to move transaction logs & system path to second partiton (logs) folder which you have already created

=>Right click the store=>properties=>Database tab=>Select browse & move the exchange database file &  exchange streaming file to the store folder in the second partition
Note: Check the following article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/821915/en-us fro what I have explained from above line

Method 2
=======
The steps in Method 1 require down-time then you can stop the information store service
Download Windows Support Tools for Windows 2003 Server (SP2)  from Microsoft Download Center
Use ADSIEDIT.msc & change the msExchESEParamLogPath & msExchESEParamSystemPath attributes path for the transaction logs to be generated on the second partition

Use Use ADSIEDIT.msc & change the msExchEDBFile & msExchSLVFile attributes path for the database & streaming location on the seccond partition.
Note: to add the complete path i.e. include   the .edb & .stm in these attributes
Also Check the following article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822676/en-us for what I have just explained in the above lines..
