Folder redirection and lost documents

We have had folder redirection engaged for a couple of months with everything going well. Last week the redirection server fried itself and I had to restore from backup. In the process the System drive was recovered but the data drive was not.

The data drive that housed the redirected files was rebuilt and the client machines started synching. However, in the process the client machines lost ALL of the documents in their my documents folders. It's as if the clients synched to nothing. I've tried using data recovery tools on both the server and client machines to no avail. Does nayone have any idea what might cause this and a way to recover this data?
