I have been asked to start ramping up on Windows 7. Company provided me with Windows 7 Enterprise media with a valid KMS key. Of course, the only time I have to work on a new system is at home. Will I be able to activate a stand alone version of Windows 7 using this Enterprise version and the KMS key that was provided? I know the new KMS activation wants to check in with AD and KMS host every so often, but I don't plan on having an AD environment or KMS host at home. Am I out of luck with this license key or do I have any options?
Can you VPN to your work LAN from home? Should activate without problem, and will help you troubleshoot other things that may be specific to your LAN, like shares, printers, internal SharePoint sites, etc.
There is some very useful, relevant information in the answers to this question provided by experts, and I think it should not be deleted. Collectively, I believe the various responses do answer the asker's question.
I will leave the issues of points to the experts concerned...
No need of a domain, you can use kms to activate workstations on a workgroup.
