Vista 32 bit Randomly Freezes

My laptop (Dell XPS M1330) started to lock up every so often but now it does it within a minute...or up to 5 minutes after a reboot.  I did the safe boot and it gets as far as crcdisk.sys and then hangs for awhile before letting me login.  I've disabled the services and application in msconfig.  There are alot of erros in the event log, but I've searched for all of the errors and I can't find anything.  I did see Event ID 4609 saying the Com+ Event system detected a bad return code during its internal processing.  the result was 8007043c from line 45 of d:\vistasp1_gdr\com\complus\src\events\tier1\eventsystemobj.cpp

Doing searches on the web it was suggested that I change the Com+ service to manual.  That didn't help.

I've booted from the Vista disk and tried to repair the system, it runs through tests and doesn't find anything wrong.

I've uninstalled the last couple of software programs I installed.  One was Dell download manager and the other was something to do with Adobe.

Sometimes it lets me get as far as getting on the internet and going to Dell's support site...and then it freezes again.  It doesn't lock up in the same place every time.

The mouse always stays active (I can move it around).

The check disk finds some orphaned files and unindexed files but it appears to fix them right away.

Another strange thing, it will lock up and if I leave it alone for an hour it will suddenly start working again...but that doesn't always happen.

I have the latest BIOS installed.

Also, I tired renaming the following files:
\windows\system32\drivers\1394bus.sys
\windows\system32\drivers\ohci1394.sys
\windows\system32\driverstore\filerepository\1394.inf XXXXXX

no luck

I called Dell support a few days ago and they said it was a bad hard drive.  They actually had me do what both of you suggested so I'll give you guys the points.  I'll attach the details of my chat log in case it might help someone else:

Here was what the Dell rep told me to do:
Reboot the system.
Keep on tapping F8 once you see the DELL logo.
Choose Repair your Computer from the list.
Log in as instructed.
Choose System Recovery options.
Then choose Command Prompt.
Type in chkdsk c: /r then press enter.
Unmount the hard drive if it asks you to.

He had me run this test twice and it got stuck both times.  Then he had me:
Please ensure that the system is turned off. Remove all external peripherals. Press and hold the <Fn> key on the keyboard. Continue to hold the <Fn> key while pressing the power button. Release both buttons. (Note which lock LEDs are lit). That is called the Pre-boot System Assessment.
After that test, you will be given options from which you need to choose Test System. It will lead you to another list of options where you can choose Custom Tests.
Look for the hard drive Custom Tests.

One last thing...it failed the hard disk test so I had to get it replaced.
Well....Good and Bad news..... I'm glad it got resolved. Thanks for the feedback, it will surely help others in the future.
