I have removed and reinstalled iTunes/quicktime many (many) times. Problem started with trying to purchase RealPlayerPlus so I could burn DVD's. After 1-2 wks, and tech help from RP, I finally had a computer tech over to the house who told me my DVD/CD RW drive meant DVD player/cd read,write and that the drive was not set up to burn DVD. So I ordered a DVD drive from TigerDirect. Meantime, I uninstalled RP, and have gone through various problems with suggestions to delete high/low filters in the registry, etc. Now I have iTunes working, I think.. it burned a DVD that won't play on my TV DVD player, it says doesn't recognize format?...but most irritating problem at this Point is when I click on QT it goes into "safe mode" and gives me that message...

As per one of the solutions, I have just uninstalled QuickTime AGAIN and I am in the process of installing an old version??

Installing old ver. , 7.1.6 I believe it was, didn't cure anything. Same response...safe mode and then error 2096.

I checked compatibility tab, as I read that one too, and even with old ver. it is still de-selected.

If the above doesn't work, try manually uninstalling Quicktime before reinstalling by following the steps in this link: http://cnx.com/?p=417&cpage=1
Just running the normal uninstall apparently leaves some orphaned files behind that may be causing the error.

I had already tried the compatibility mode tab de-select, but I checked again just to make sure. Then I tried the manual uninstall from http://cnx.com/?p=417&cpage=1. It changed nothing. Still same error msg. I didn't understand (or do) the "Next, get rid of most of the registry entries." or the next step, "Find out where it thinks the uninstaller is." It says, "Double click the .MSI file you downloaded, and follows the prompts." Hadn't downloaded any file? "Search and destroy!" again, no idea.
I did, for the 23rd time, remove everything I could about QT and installed the standalone. No help. I've uninstalled iTunes and QT multiple times now and re-installed together and alone. Doesn't seem to matter.
One thing I did, way back when this started was to follow directions at support.microsoft.com/kb/9

I refuse to reformat my hd for a stinking QT player!

Sorry knrose. I am out of ideas. I've posted every possible fix that I could find on that error. I was even able to duplicate and fix the error myself, but my suggestions obviously didn't help you on your PC.
I was hoping that someone else would post other possible fixes, but unfortunately they haven't.

From my previous post above:

I was then able to make the error go away by unchecking the compatibilty mode. However, you had stated that you did the same thing with no luck.

Good news...I think. We're closer! iTunes doesn't have a compatibility tab but when I clicked on "Properties" for QT, clicked on "compatibility tab", it was clear so I put ...Service Pack 2 back in there and QT opened up!!! BUT...it did it in safe mode? I then tried all the others like Windows 95,98,,2000, Service Pack 1, etc. and I got the error msg. Went back to Ser Pk 2 and QT opend in safe mode again, with no error msg. I played a video, which worked fine, except smaller window than usual.
So, ?something in QT initialization file translates into safe mode? And thots how to stop that?
