Vista won't print
I have never been able to print from my computer. The other day I installed a new HP Laserjet and tried print. Low and behold it started to work I got all the dialog boxes the print job shows up in the print que however nothing happens. After thinking it was a defective printer I took it back to the store and followed every instructions to a T. Still same symptoms. I know the printer works cause I installed it on my laptop and it worked. I was thinking it was a problem with the HP drivers that yes I downloaded from their site and installed, so I installed my Epson Photo printer and had the same problem. I now have searched several sites and have not come up with a fix so far. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. I am convinced it is a Vista problem.

Make sure you have the latest updates from Microsoft and that you have the latest service pack installed for vista

Yes I have updated the system with the latest patches and SP2 that was the first thing I did. Still no help.

can you print a test page through the printers and devices and then accessing the printer's properties?
Check the event logs.
Is the printer connected directly to the vista system or is it setup as a network printer?
If it is a network printer, is the printer configured with a static IP?

Are you trying to print via USB?
Have you run sfc /scannow from an elevated command prompt (Start> Run> {type} cmd {press CTRL + SHIFT + ENTER})

Both printers are connected directly to the computer. I have tried to do test prints from the printer properties and get nothing in the log. it's almost as if Vista believes the print happened but nothing aver gets to the printer.

Check the printer properties/status to see whether the print jobs are pending because the printer jobs are  paused?
Unfortunately, there is nothing to go on here.  Do you have anything in the application/system event logs?

Ok I did another test print and still no errors in any log. However I do see the following entry in the application log labeled as information. It is the only thing that might give a clue. based on a search EbpmonB I found a mention that Mcafee had interfered with this for someone else. Based on that I uninstalled Mcafee and tried to print again with no luck.

USB?

ASKER

Yes USB why?

Just want to know the basics before offering other suggestions as it could be Parallel (unlikely - but possible).

I cannot explain why this worked when you recommended it cause I tried it twice before asking the experts. Oh well thanks for your help.

No problems - glad it worked.  Perhaps it was plugging it into another port that worked.  Sometimes the ports go faulty!

Oh I hope not this system is only 2 months old.

I am sure it is fine - just always worth trying another port and plugging another device in the original one to see if it works.
