On my vista laptop, Windows Security Updates relating to SQL Server2005 have been failing for some time. See attached "Screenshot of Failed Security Updates - plus current SQL Service status". Any help would be appreciated.

You have two instances of SQL Server in your machine based upon the snapshot above

1. SQL Server 2005 ( Standard Edition for Act)
2. SQL Server 2005 Express

>> 1. SQL Server 2005 ( Standard Edition for Act)

Kindly apply SP3 and give it a try

>> 2. SQL Server 2005 Express

Your Express Service is not started.
Kindly start SQLExpress Service and then give it a try.

rrjegan17, To clarify,
(1) when you say ">> 1. SQL Server 2005 ( Standard Edition for Act)...Kindly apply SP3 and give it a try"
Are you saying that I need to "apply SP3" to this particular instance? How do I do that?

(2) when you say ">> 2. SQL Server 2005 Express...Your Express Service is not started. Kindly start SQLExpress Service and then give it a try." Do I just start the SQLEXPRESS process manulally, and then launch the SP3 installation? Do I need to stop the other (ACT7) SQL process first?

I'd try this:
http://kb.sagesoftwareonline.com/cgi-bin/sagesoftwareonline.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=21104

I'd also update your ACT! to 10.02 or 10.03 - many SQL and GAC fixes

Yes.. You need to start SQLExpress service manually and then try doing the installation.

>> Do I need to stop the other (ACT7) SQL process first?

If ACT7 is using it, try stopping it for a while and then try to do the installation.

When trying to apply SP3, I am prompted to "select the program features thaht you would like to update". Problem is, I cannot check some of the checkboxes. See attached screenshot.

GLComputing, you solved part of my question. I when to the URL you posted and looks like the ACT-related SQL instance has already been upgraded to SP3. See screenshot.

lee88,
I meant applying SP3 to the other instance and Starting this SQLEXPRESS instance so that security updates can be applied without any issues..

As per your Initial snapshot in the question posted, you have SP3 for Express edition.

lee88,
What's your stand with respect to this question.
As you have posted one another question to uninstall SQL Server Express edition.

Author

Commented:
trying to decide what to do.
The ACT-instance is apparently OK.
The other SQL-service will not Start, so I cannot follow your SP3 instructions (without further direction).
So I considered uninstalling it (other EE question), thinking that would be a simple task, but apparently its not.
At this point, I am open to suggestions.

Are you running any other SQL database or is it only ACT!?

Author

Commented:
I am not running any apps that use SQL databases on this PC at this time. I have not used ACT in 6 months. My only hesitation to uninstall all of it is that my sales group may want to do something with ACT down the road, and ACT is set up to access / sync with other PCs.

I could temporarily disable the ACT-SQL instance, although I'm not sure it is having noticeable negetive effect on performance.

I was just trying to remedy the persisting SQL-Updates-won't-install error, which is appaerntly tied to the other SQL instance (Service will not manually start - not sure why).

If not using SQL for anything else, try this:

This is a procedure I wrote to get the most clean install possible:
Uninstall any version of ACT! from Windows Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs
Download and run the Uninstaller.exe from the ACT! KB 19338 (the exe, not the manual uninstall)
Uninstall any MS SQL items from the Control Panel if still there
Uninstall MSXML 6 Services from Control Panel if it's still there
Perform a Selective restart with MSCONFIG as per ACT! KB 14499
Install ACT! full install
Install latest ACT! patch if the previous install was a previous build and then any Hotfix
Use the link I posted above to update SQL to the latest service pack
Check task manager to make sure .Net optimisation is finished (look for the setup, msiexec or ngen) - might take up to 10 minutes
Restore from Selective Startup Mode with MSCONFIG
Reboot

Takes time, but will give the cleanest and most stable install.
