Error fetching SOA

Hi,
made this some times before... but today it won't work.

i have made a fresh install of DNS server & IIS, set up forward & reverse lookups.. firewall using port 53 inbound.
I try to resolve DNS but cannot receive any response from IP 188.72.202.105
Nameservers: ns1.bestcheckin.com & ns2.bestcheckin.com
Child Nameservers: ns1.bestcheckin.com & ns2.bestcheckin.com on same IP  188.72.202.105
I can ping the IP and receive respose

DNS test runs return this error:

Your NS records at your nameservers are:
188.72.202.105 Does not respond
188.72.202.105 Does not respond

Error fetching SOA from ns1.bestcheckin.com [188.72.202.105], request timed out. Probably DNS server is offline

Running Windows 2003, IIS6

I have attached a screenshoot of DNS configuration

do you have domain transfers enabled? what happens if you perform a nslookup to the server?

ASKER

yes, zone transfer is enabled.

Nslookup shows up:
Default server: ns1.bestcheckin.com
Address: 188.72.202.105

> bsetcheckin.com  returns Server: ns1.bestcheckin.com  Address: 188.72.202.105

> 188.72.202.105  returns both nameservers ns1.bestcheckin.com & ns2.bestcheckin.com
so a nslookup from ns2 works find towards ns1 server? do you have UDP and TCP port 53 open?
Avatar of sh2gr

ASKER

yes TCP 53 is configured to be open. I did not try the ns2 lookup towards ns1 . how is this done? (looks into the woods)

ah...ok, see...

ideed, it returns perfect lookup to ns1... so trafic flow is not the issue.
I deleted the ns2 zone, but still no results.

I tried to viev localy on localhost and receive a error 403 forbidden.
arghhh
what if you try and go the other way around. delete the zone off ns1 and make ns2 the primary. this is mostly a test to see why it is jacked up.

nothing, still the same
pings & nslookups possible so far
I am somehow not convienced about the error i receive localy... checked IIS, no any obvious wrong settings.
what are the full errors in the event log

ASKER

Just a few error warnings, all the same:
"The DNS server machine currently has no DNS domain name. It's dns name is a single label hostname with no domain....."  and so on meaning that the computer name.
But i do assign the host names manually on any domain

tried it... no results. >pulling my hair
I tried to resolve 2 domains under 2 different registrars. same issue on both.
No DNS server response.
I am now focusing on IIS permissions issues... last try

i don't know how much this makes sence, but running NSLOOKUP several times, i reveice 4 different values for default server

1. www.bestcheckin.com
2. bestcheckin.com
3. ns1.bestcheckin.com
4. ns2.bestcheckin.com

i did a dns check including my dns server IP:

Check if the server "217.20.115.1" is configured for "bestcheckin.com" ... failed.
*** ERROR *** Query failed, 0 answers, status: query refused
Why do you have both ns1 and ns2 having the same external ip address? and how are you configuring this?

I have only one IP assigned, above i have listed the entries i made with my registrar
Ok this seems to be a strange problem. can you please explain in detail and maybe diagram what you have setup and what you are trying to do. Then point out where the problem is or if there are multiple problems.

Setup so far:
-Nameservers: ns1.bestcheckin.com & ns2.bestcheckin.com
Child Nameservers: ns1.bestcheckin.com & ns2.bestcheckin.com on same IP  188.72.202.105

- DNS records as shown on attached image file

- registering domain within IIS

I did nothing special then ever before. Setup DNS & IIS to run live
cosmicfox, all is as described from the beginning till now.

I spoke to my server provider, he was so kind to look together at the settings, there was nothing he was able to complain about the settings.

I do not think that it is a dns server issue, more likely an authentication problem.
For example, i can not even open localhost to view my default website entry under wwwroot

nor the bestcheckin.com
IIS and DNS are independent of each other.

I must appologize cosmicfox.... as always, the problem of any issue sits just 1/2 feed in front of the PC
I opened port 80 UDP as I had only TCP enabled.

stupid me..

However, your approach and recommendations where perfect to check DNS settings.
