Appdata redirection - causes network latency?

Hi all,

I have 8 Citrix servers running Outlook 2007 and other java intensive programs. At any one point there is 120 appdata folders being redirected from the Citrix servers. The server is fairly old and i now have a bottleneck where there appears to be too much I/O activity for the server to cope with.

Anyone had this issue before?

Thats fine Carl but the appdata folder can in excess of 200 Mg so if i make this roaming then logging times will spiral out of control.

If the programs are installed on the Citrix server and AppData is not redirected, AppData will be on the Citrix server so no AppData data will be traversing your LAN or WAN.

Yes but if you have 10 servers the appdata will be different on every server

No problem.  You will be running a different app from each server.  If a user is fortunate enough to run multiple apps from one server, then all those apps AppData data will be on that one server.  I don't know of many apps that share AppData data.

You can script the use of one or more of these utilities to cleanup profile data left on the Citrix servers:

BombProf
ICSweep (useful for some)
RemProf

Say i updated my Outlook profile when i was on server 1 on Monday then log out. Tuesday comes i logon to server 2, but now i have the old profile, why? because my appdata profile is local. This woudl cause massive headache. There is now way you can load balance applications like Outlook across multiple servers without roaming or redirecting the appdata folder. Do you agree?

Right now if i look at my server there are 1296 files open, 500 being written to the rest are read only. Id say 70% of these are profile and appdata connections. Im going to buy a new server, RAID 5, 15k disks and move the appdata and TSprofiles over to the new server.

What you think?

Note that there are several more reasons why you really shouldn't relocate
the Local Application Data folder to a server share. If you really want to
copy the nk2-file to the server, then use a logoff script to copy it.
