When hooking up two Linksys wireless access points on a network, can/should they be the same same (SSID)?

It's possible - the computer should even hop to the strongest signal.

They can be the same but they don't have to be.  It is much more convenient if they are the same.  If you have an authentication setup for them make sure those are the same too.  I was quite surprised when I found out they two Wireless APs could have the same SSID.

It depends on what you're trying to do but in most cases if they are on the same network then yes you should because it's more convenient for users and more convenient to setup users.
Sorry, clarifying, yes same channel and same SSID will work;)
