I have Office 2003 and Windows XP Home...For some reason for the last week or so I am starting to get temporary files created everytime I open a file...  The file names look like...
CALENDAR.XLS~RF84bd0d6.tmp...  They start of the temp file all start with ~RF ...   I did some digging and it looks like it might be a permission issue but I have Windows XP Home and there aren't any permissions...  I can save and delete and modify the files in that directory so I'm not sure what's going on...

Thanks for the heads up about malwarebytes.  I will run that.  I have Trend Micro and I figured that would've picked up any malware... :)

Any other ideas?  I'm still having this problem.  Malwarebytes is a sweet program.  I'm not having this issue with Vista/Office 2003.  May have to run a repair or something...  Any other ideas anyone?

The Malware Bytes program is awesome but I'm still having the problem.
Hmm, maybe the reason for those ifles is because of AutoRecover and AutoSave. More info here:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/help/HP101407291033.aspx
My office 2007 also creates these files but after I close them they are gone and
if I have a power failure then i can recover my work with the help of those files.

You should try to disable just for testing the auto backup/save feature. See how that works.

Regards.

If that's the case wouldn't the temp files appear in the Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\ directory as opposed to my docs? just a thought.
Here is how Excel 2003 creates temp files.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814068
The temp files get created in the directory the excel files are saved and still open for editing.

BTW here is another link to the exact same problem as yours maybe it will help

Also these trouble shooting tips may be helpful to look at.

You said also that for the last week you started seeing these files.
Did you change / modify / install  /update something in the system before observing this ?
And regarding your previous post are the temp files only created in my docs ?

Regards.

Hmmm that is interesting.  Thanks for the help again.  Yeah for some reason I started seeing these files.  It may correspond with the installation of Trend but I can't be certain.  At the moment, I just delete *.tmp in a batch file overnight everynight.  Will keep you posted.
