Is the Windows 2008 SMTP service required by Exchange 2007?

Hi,

We have Exch 2007 running on Win 2008.  It's a single Exch server supporting internal users and external / Internet email.  [We've read the MS guidelines re: edge transport servers], but still dont have one.

We tried to enable TLS but the verb is not available.  A MS KB confirms that it's not available on a hub transport server when the Windows SMTP service is installed.  We recal the SMTP service being a prereq of the Exchange installation - but can't be certain.

My question is therefore, what are the implications for us and our single Exchange 2007 server (serving internal and Internet email)  if we remove the Windows 2008 SMTP role?

Thanks

Thanks, that what I thought.   Happy to split the points based on your answers.

Can either of you think of a reason why the verb startls is still not available? (no points on this one)

Thanks

Hi both posts are from me :-)

not sure on the error where do you get it?
It's not an error.  If I telnet and try to startls, the verb isn't available.
Sorry I don't know telnet very well at all
Probably better to open another question in different zones.
Answer provided through an external URL.
You mind if I ask why the B grade?
The kink was provided purely to confirm my first post, it's always good for the requester to have external verification of expert posts.
