Attachment filename changing automatically
One of my users complained as follows:
"In this past week, when various individuals send me a file, it opens with a very usual file name.
For example, this morning XXXX sent me a file which he titled WwwwwwwHHHChemicalsDraft10 2309.pptx. That was the file name of the attachment to his email message. When the file opened on my computer, it had the file name Ppt0000008.ppt. This has also happened with files sent to me by ZZZZZ and DDDDD that I can explicitly recall. It has happened with both PowerPoint and Word documents. All of these have occurred this week, with no prior instances of this happening."
This is for outlook 2003, windows xp and exchange server 2003. I understand that page numbers also get missing.
I opened PPTX and DOCX files with Office 2003, using the compatibility pack. The file names did not change.

Comments outside the double quotes are mine. The Outlook 2003 comment was put there by me, for extra information, as I know that the user receives his emails using Outlook 2003. This morning, I requested that the user forward to me, some of the files that open with unusual names. He replied my email and told me that all PowerPoint pptx files open with unusual names.
I have recommended that he download the latest microsoft updates, update his antivirus and perform a virus scan. I also recommended that he reinstall Microsoft Office if the updates and scan do not resolve the issue. The user's laptop is not available to me. I and the user are in different states.

I and the user have not been in touch, so I'm closing this question. Thanks for the comments.
Have you seen this happen yourself? Users quite frankly aren't that reliable when it comes to reporting problem details. For example, Outlook cannot open a document so it's quite impossible for it to be responsible for missing page numbers. What format are the suspect messages in and are the users using Outlook or Word as the message editor?
