Invalid Format when Launching Some Games

I have my PC connected to a 32" LCD TV via a DVI to HDMI cable. Using this setup, I get a bit of an overscan, to the point where a maximized window will not show a scroll bar on the right side, and the bottom 1/3 of the time is cut off.
When I run some games, everything works, however, some make the tv display "invalid format." I have tried using every resolution i could, but it still will not display the game. When i switched to a DVI to VGA adapter with a VGA cable, the Invalid Format problem did not happen but the picture quality suffered.

How can I get the compatibility without sacrificing the quality?

What refresh rate have you set?
Sounds like you might have to run the games in a window.

Right now, its set at 60 hz.

I have tried opening in windows by putting "-window", "-windowed", and "-w" after the target on the shortcut. Non of those methods worked, The game wouldn't run. Is there another way i can be opening in a window?
Well, the resolution being pushed to your tv cannot be higher than the native maximum resolution of your tv. What resolution are you trying to game at?
Additionally, there is no one definitve method to starting a game in a window, many games are different and have different settings. Some need registry edits, command line parameters and in game settings to be changed.
I had a similar problem with Left for Dead which when started, pushed the invalid format message to me until I fixed the .INI file. What games are you trying to play?
i get invalid formats on Medival2: Total War and COD: World at War

Once you actually get those to run in a window, you can change the graphics options to something that will work on your display
