Moving Information Store to external drive

I have a problem and require some assistance.

I ran a defrag of Information Store 4 (IS4) on our Exchange 2003 server and created the new file on an external USB drive.  Our main drive is running out of disk space and as IS4 only contains archived mailboxes I decided to bring it live on the external device.  Stupidly I didn't read any documentation beforehand and as the store was already down, just changed the references to the database path in ESM.  When the IS tried to mount it wanted to create new files so I cancelled and renamed the rebuild files, then allowed the system to create a blank IS4 on the external drive.  I thought if I dismounted the new IS4 and renamed the rebuilt files all would be fine, but it will still not work, stating:

"At least one of this store's database files is missing.  Mounting the store will force the creation of an empty database..."

What can I do to get the system to see my original IS4 file??  I tried moving the files back to the original drive and changing the database path, but I get the same message as above.

Any feedback would be appreciated...
