SBS 2008 - DNS Server Service Needs a Restart at random intervals to get mail flowing and web working again - Why?

Recently installed SBS 2008 server on HP Proliant ML350 G6 box.  HP recently replaced the RAID Memory module as it caused the server to crash on a regular basis.  Crashing resolved, but DNS Server service needs the odd restart to get mail-flow and web working again.  The service is started when I check, but a restart gets everything working.  All updates / service packs applied apart from Exchange 2007 SP2.

This is annoying the customer and me as I can't figure out why.

Any ideas anyone?

Without checking, as I am on a train, whatever is set as default!

Have not setup forwarders, but don't see why it works for 3 or 4 days, then loses the ability to work with a restart of dns server service waking it up again.
I have setup forwarders, so now will play the waiting game.  Takes about 3-4 days to bug out.
Thanks Glen.

Thanks Beechy_ - I will give that a whirl in a couple of days once the forwarders has been ruled in / out as I would like to know exactly what solved it so that if it happens again, it can be of benefit to others.  Will keep you both posted in a couple of days.
the forwarders will most likely fix the problem but if you want to test the solution I posted you will have to disable forwarders first then implement the article - either method should provide a valid solution
I think the part at the begining of the article that states: "This problem does not happen if DNS Server is configured to use forwarders for Internet name resolution instead of root hints." confirms that forwarders will resolve this issue.

I have seen this a lot with Windows 2008 DNS servers which is why I ALWAYS configure forwarders.  As a result of which I have very few DNS problems.
I guess the question is - Why the heck don't Microsoft ask you to specify DNS forwarders when setting up SBS if they are required / needed to make the product work properly?
No Idea!

I am guessing because it works perfectly without them in the grand old US of A
Well I'll just ask my customers to move country then ;-)
Pesky products - this one has been such a pain in the ass, as Glen knows.  The smoothest of migrations from SBS 2003 to SBS 2008 (not!).  Then the hardware fails, now DNS keeps dying.  I think I am going to change careers or go and hide in a dark corner!
If they want someone else to look after it for them my e-mail address is in my profile ;-)
If only you lived closer!  I'll mention it to them - you'll like the big boss ;-)
i live closer.... ;-)
I'll bear that in mind once I have received the cheque for the server installation!!
All is working (so far) - but as soon as I type this I expect it will go bang!
Thanks guys for your assistance - will remember this for the next SBS 2008 box I get the joy of playing with!
Much appreciated Glen.
