I've been experimenting with dbms_system.get_env but struggling to actually get it to do something other than show the variable to dbms_output

I'm using this to pass a integer value to a sql script which must than use this as part of a select

e.g. (just to demonstrate) select ... from ... where x > $variable

so if variable = 10, select all entries where field X is greater than 10

and one other thing (sorry know these are a newbie questions), but should this be used in a procedure or not?

(Oracle 10g)

Thanks in advance.
