Comparission between Netbackup & Backup Exec

We are having both the above products (backup exec & netbackup) for two Data Center; we are in a process of upgrading the tape library and making the new tape library (Qualstar TLS 46120) as the centralized library so that both the Datacenters can use it.

In one Data Center A we have 34 servers with netbackup  as the backup software and another Data Center  B (which is located beside Data Center A)which is having 20 servers and we are using backup Exec as the backup software.

Pls. provide us your review with valuable supportive document of comparison for centralizing the backup software .i.e. Backup Exec or Netbackup as per the experts suggestion.

Thanks & Regards,

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I have used both products and we have totally removed BackupExec. We are currently on Netbackup 6.0 and will be going to 6.5.4 in the next few months and 7.0 once it is release. BackupExec is excellent in smaller environments. The problem is that it can only backup one stream at a time. In larger environments, Netbackup can perform multiple streams per job. This creates faster backups. Also, BackupExec is licensed per product, per option, per client. Symmantec's new license model, according the meeting last week with our account rep, will be a per TB license for Netbackup. This will allow for unlimited clients licenses. Also, our the one thing we do not like about Netbackup currently is that we cannot restore a singel email from just the information store backup. With the upgrade, there is no longer the need to backup the store and the mailboxes seperately. You will be able to restore emails based solely off the information store backup. An additional advantage to Netbackup\PureDisk is that it dedups the data. I hope this answers you question. Please feel free to let me know if you have any additional ones.

Mr. rbarnhardt:,

Thanks for your reply, yes to some extend your reply was upto my request, but if you also can pls. provide us with the latest licenses details for Netbackup (which you have mentioned) it will be of great help.

I don't have the exact figures on that since it is new and we are just going through learning and moving to it. We have some additional meetings, but basically say you have 10TB of data to backup. This could be a total from many systems. The license fee would be based on that 10TB, so as an example, that could be a fee of $100,000(I just made this number up). That would allow you to install the clients on as many systems as you need. Basically, unlimited client licenses. When the maintenance is up in a year, the report is ran, and you renewal is based on how much data you are backing up.
