I'd like to repurpose a Dell 2850 as an iSCSI SAN target

We have about a three-year-old Dell 2850 that is a fine machine, but the Windows server running on it is about to be virtualized.  This leaves the 2850 with not much to do, and...well....we're just getting started with virtualization and don't have a SAN yet...so.....

The machine has 4GB of RAM and six fat 10k 300GB SCSI drives so it seems like a pretty doable thing!  I've played a bit with OpenFiler as a virtual appliance and certainly find it usable enough, but I wonder about it supporting my 2850.

Does anyone have suggestions for a good software iSCSI package to repurpose the old girl?

Run Solaris on it.   iSCSI target is built into the O/S, you can do hot snapshots, and the ZFS file system gives you a lot of flexibility when it comes to reconfiguration, expansion/growth, and RAIDn protection and data integrity.

Plus if you run the OpenSolaris, you can legally get a free license.

Datacore SAN melody has good write ups in a production environment
