Domain name still exists after format?

I have no experience with Server 08 Std , but recently, my company decided to deploy the use of a server and since i have no idea how to set it up, i did a trial and error as well as google , and got it up.

However, fearing i might have play with the settings too much , i formatted the Server PC after i unjoined another PC (XP Pro).

Now i can't seem to use my old domain name back, in dcpromo, it keeps saying there is a duplicate. How is this possible? I thought formatting it would clear all records , especially since i unjoined the XP Pro PC beforehand. Is there any way to completely remove it?

Beats me, when i tried to use the same name in the dcpromo wizard, it prompts me and tells me there is a duplicate name. Any way i can track it down with any kind of software?

No software can check whats not there  .... look if i have one server in the domain and i format that box then the info is gone and i can again start with the same name .... its somewhat picking the info .... did you do somekind of restore from somewhere or ghosting the machine or something ??

I joined 1 PC to the domain to see if it's working, but i unjoined it before formatting. Would this be an issue? This PC that i joined then unjoined is mostly off anyway , it's somewhat a display unit.

My mistake, turns out my colleague also installed server on his work PC cause he says it's stable and used the same name(for whatever reason). Never occurred to him to tell me beforehand, bah..
