Event ID 12293: Publishing the Key Management Service (KMS) to DNS in the 'domain_name' domain failed.

I am receiving the above-mentioned error in the event log of my new Exchange 2007 server. I have reviewed several documents on the internet in regards to the message, but not sure if it is even necessary for my Exchange Server to have this service trying to publish to DNS. I am not very familiar with KMS, but does this mean that my Exchange server is acting as a KMS Host, and if so, is that something I would want it to do? I've contemplated turning this service off, but am a bit concerned about possible ramifications.

Yes. It means your Exchange server is acting as a KMS Host most likely because you used a KMS Host key to activate the OS.  Once you use that key it enables it as a host and tries to publish in DNS (this is typical behavior).  I don't think KMS generates a significant amount of traffic so it might not be a bad thing if you need a KMS Host but it might be better on a DC.  Also, if you've used this key to activate other servers you may want to check and see if they're publishing in DNS too... or check your AD DNS under domain->_tcp for any _VLMCS entries...  Any servers publishing as VLMCS are probably acting as KMS Host.

OK, thanks for the information!  We do have an intended KMS Host just recently set up, but it isn't a DC, just a member server...is it important that it be a DC instead?  The member server I mention is listed in DNS _VLMCS, and no others are...including my Exchange server....which I guess would be expected due to the error I'm trying to resolve. So, I do not want my Exchange server to make these attempts at placing an entry in DNS for KMS...do you know the best process to stop it from doing so?  And...you're right, I have several other Windows 2008 servers failing at exactly the same thing!

Thank you so much for providing a thorough solution. Running the slmgr -cdns command in R1 did work. Also, thanks for the additional information on KMS, because it gives me a better understanding of how it is supposed to work!  I will be working on switching over my servers to be KMS clients tomorrow!
