Sonicwall TZ190 and Android 2.0 VPN

Last Modified: 2012-06-22
I need help setting up my Android 2.0 device to VPN into my Sonicwall TZ190.  I am not really sure what type of VPN to select.

The options are:

I know all of my VPN info but can't seem to get any of these to work.

I will open a support case with Sonicwall.  Thanks for the input!
Hey r270ba, did you reach any resolution with SonicWall? I'd be interested to know if this is possible with the native Android 2.0 VPN client.

I haven't been able to figure it out but I have not submitted a support request to sonicwAll.

Sonicwall sent me to this link but I still can't figure it out.  I am going to call them and ask them why I pay for support if they can't do more than just send me links.  This experience has been very uncharacteristic with Sonicwall, but I am a little aggravated.

Another idea is to approach some of the VPN software makers... Checkpoint Software and/or VPN Tracker to see what they are doing to resolve this problem...   I am going to try out the L2TP solution by going to both Verizon Wireless AND ATTWireless and test it on both the iphone and the Android...

I am also open to any suggestions as I need an emergency access solution as well for VPN from a smart phone...

We have finally made a little progress in getting this resolved.  While we are not able to L2TP VPN in yet, I think we are getting close.  I will post results when they are complete.

I'm looking forward to a solution too! Thanks for keeping us updated.

I am at a loss here.  Sonicwall again seems to be no help and the instructions for the iphone do not seem to work.  We did get the L2TP setup for Windows Mobile but not Android or iPhone.

If you haven't found a solution yet, try setting the phase 2 encryption to AES-128. I will be trying with android today and tomorrow, nut that got the iphone working.

Thanks for the update...I will try that.  I have actually found that installing LogMeIn on my servers and the LogMeIn Ignition for Android is working just as well if not better.  No need to even VPN in.

I'm able to establish a connection with Android 2.1 with a Droid Incredible.  The link provided by Sonicwall was largely appropriate with some minor clarifications and one major change.  The clarifications have to do with configuring the firewall rule and NAT.  Both were unnecessary as both were configured auto-magically during the configuration of the L2TP server.

The biggest change is in the IPSec proposals.  Unfortunately, at least as of Android 2.1, you've got to go with DES, rather than 3DES.  This was pretty obvious from the Sonicwall logs after first trying to connect with 3DES.  I don't know if this changes with FROYO, but I certainly hope so.  This is a showstopper for me, as I've got a boatload of Sonicwall VPN clients on laptops to support as well.

From the Android side, go with IPSec with pre-shared key.  The username and password won't be prompted for until you finish your configuration, so don't worry that you don't see them.  You'll be prompted again every time you connect.

I know the original poster went another direction, but hopefully this will help others still looking for an answer.
