Getting the error: The Ordinal 685 could be not located in the dynamic link library iertutil.dll
On a relatively new install of Windows, I upgraded to IE 8. the installation was a little flaky at first, but seemed to go ok. At startup I then got an error saying iertutil.dll was missing. Explorer wouldn't even start. I downloaded the dll and now am getting the error in the title. Explorer will still not start and if I do anything I have to open it through task mgr. Even then I get the error 2 or 3 times, but at least stuff will eventually open. I've looked on google, plenty of people with the same problem but no solutions.
The solution I see referenced the most links to a KB article on IBM's site that has since been removed. Any ideas?

cvonrabe--What is the version of iertutil.dll did you install? Mine is 7.0.6000.16915, but I run IE7.
I think I would uninstall IE8 or better yet use System Restore to a date before you installed IE8. (This assumes the PC did not come with IE8 installed.) Does the problem still exist?
You could also submit the iertutil.dll file to
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.virustotal.com/xhtml/index_en.html
just to be sure this is not malware.
And look into Event Viewer (Start|Administrative Tools|Event Viewer). Click on "System" in the left panel. Do you see RedBall error icon(s) timestamped at the exact time the problem occurred? If so, click on the RedBall. The first message will have some data on what the problem is, but usually it is not too easy to understand. Click the blue go.microsoft.com link. On the next window click the link to send a report to Microsoft. Another window should open (though it may take some time for the information in the right panel to appear) which may offer some more understandable info and maybe even a solution.
P.S. When you say "Explorer wouldn't even start. " do you mean IE8 or Windows Explorer?

Ohhh beaten to it... Just read that same article myself, hence my last post! :)
cvonrabe--More ideas:
Boot into Safe Mode and run SFC /SCANNOW from a command prompt. This is a way to repair and/or replace Windows files.
And I wonder if this has any relevance to your problem

I am not sure I understand this reference and how it might help, but...

Reinstall IE8 in safe mode

Which Service Pack? If not SP3, go ahead and install it. It very well may fix the issue.

I ended up being able to uninstall IE 8. That fixed the problem. Thanks everyone!
