8024402c Windows Updates error on server 2008 domain controller

Hi,
I am getting this error on my Server 2008 SP2 Domain Controller.  I have searched all the sites & have carried out the following:

Stopped all Sophos Anti Virus services (I even tried uninstalling it at one point)
Checked Windows firewall - disabled
Set proxy - netsh winhttp>set proxy proxy-server="servername:port
followed by
net stop WuAuServ
net start WuAuServ

Then I tried renaming the Software Distribution folder, but got an access denied message.
I was logged in as domain administrator, but couldn't try local administrator account as there isn't one on a domain controller.

Has anyone got any ideas?  I have tried contacting Microsoft as they offer free support on Windows Updates errors, but the reply I got was "due to the nature of the technical query, it has not been possible for me to answer your query".
If anyone can help me I would be grateful

the proxy address you used in the netsh command was that servername:port?

yes, I set it to the correct proxy address & port
Sorry, I misread your question, we connect to an external proxy, so address reads something like xyz.cache.abc.org:8080
is the proxy reacable by this machine, ie have you tested with a telnet to that host and port?
If you fiull in the proxy settings in your browser, can you then check for updates?
I have tried using telnet to connect to our proxy address, but it said that the destination was unreachable.
However, I also tried the same connection on our 2003 Domain Controller which is connecting to Windows Updates just fine & that wouldn't connect either.  Could that just mean that port 23 is not open on the proxy server?
As for the proxy settings in my browser on the server, they are set to the same address as all the other servers (all updating fine) & I have also made sure that there are no settings in the exceptions list.
The only difference I can see between this server & our other domain controller is that it is running server 2008 whereas the one that updates ok is running server 2003.  Could this just be a 2008 setting that needs to be configured?
with telnet test i mean: telnet host port so telnet proxyhost proxyport.

Have you checked this KB: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/900935
Hi,
Thanks for all the info.  I have now successfully used telnet to connect to the proxy server from my 2008 domain controller as suggested.
I have also read through the supports article & tried the following:

Firstly, I had carried out most of this before when reading other articles, but I can confirm that the proxy settings in Internet Explorer are correct.
I have also used netsh winhttp command (proxyconfig.exe doesn't apply to a 2008 server) to set the proxy settings to the same as the browser - again I had already done this previously, but just to make sure..
Then I checked DNS & can confirm that the entry for the DC is correct there.

I tried running Windows Updates again, but got the same error - 8024402C

Many thanks
do you have any way to test it withouth the proxy (direct behind nat router) to see if we have to look deeper into connection issues or software trouble
