I downloaded Exchange 2007 SP2 and followed KB973862
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/973862
and when I run D:\setup\serverroles\common\setup.exe, I get the Exchange SP2 UI and get a Script error whenever I hover on any link in the UI (See screenshot).  I then went to the Temp folder and ran default.htm from the folder and click on install SP2 and it says it is already installed (See Screenshot).
The BPA tells me that SP2 is not installed.
Also, why is the SP2 install giving me a Script error?

try running setup from the command prompt using the upgrade switch

It isn't detecting PowerShell or the Windows Installer either, so I would suspect you might have a bad download.

Did you install Windows Installer 4.5? It doesn't install automatically and it requires a reboot.

Are you running the setup.exe from the local machine or a network drive?

I tried to download Windows Installer from MS but couldn't seem to get the 64 Bit version to install as it said somthing like this update doesn't apply to this system.

I tried running setup.exe from a local drive connected via RDP.
what errors do you get running from a command prompt

Windows Installer 4.5 maybe integrated in to Windows 2008 SP2, if you have already installed that.
Otherwise the file you want is this: Windows6.0-KB942288-v2-x64.msu

The fact that it isn't detecting the installer is installed is not a good sign. Personally I would reboot the machine and see what happens then.

Hi SImon,

I started installed 2008 SP2 about two hours ago thinking that might better enable Exchange SP2 to work.  I will keep you posted.

Thanks!

Ok, Server 2008 SP2 is complete and still not able to install Exchange SP2.

I downloaded Windows6.0-KB942288-v2-x64.msu again and ran it and got a message that "this update doen not apply to your system"
windows installer 4.5 is included with windows 2008 sp2
have you tried using the command line setup?

I ran D:\setup\serverroles\common\setup.exe from "Start" "Run" and same errors.

I opened a CMD prompt and ran D:\setup\serverroles\common\setup.exe and same errors.

I tried to find out what switches were available but got a Windows error message "\Forefront\DVD_Forefront_Intro.html"

The command line being referred to is setup.com, not setup.exe

Same errors when I run setup.com.

I also downloaded another copy of E2K7SP2EN64.exe and no luck.

You have said "same errors" when you run setup.com but unless I am going blind, I cannot see where you have actually stated what the error is.

The behaviour of the GUI is also odd, given that I think it is basically a HTML page, it could point to something being incorrect with the IE security zones, which should be set back to default.

What does the Exchange Management Console say for the version number?

Exchange 2007 SP2 doesn't install on its own - and I am not aware that SBS 2008 is now shipping with it, even on new builds unless something has changed very recently.

Hi Simon,

When I say the same errors, I am talking about the Script errors and the fact tht I can't install anything from the UI for Exchange Service PAck 2.

I reset all zones to their default levels in IE and the Ui is still the same.  Script error every time I place the mouse over any link to install something and I can't launch anything from the UI.

That isn't the version of Exchange. That is the version of MMC.
You need to open the Exchange Management Console and look at the Server config. There it will list the version number.

If you login to the server as another user with Domain Admin rights, does the same problem occur?

Simon.

Author

Commented:
I created another Domain admin and tried to run Exchange SP2 and had the same results.
I downloaded Exchange service pack 1 and that UI works fine and I am able to launch SP, but it fails.  "Exchange Server setup encountered an error"

I ran DCDIAG /c and here are the results:

Not really sure why you have posted a DC diag result, because it has nothing to do with that.
You are getting script errors, which almost certainly means that something is wrong with the OS that is stopping the system from updating correctly.

However at this time I have nothing else to suggest other than a call to Microsoft.
