Updating winxp @ work. Networked

Last Modified: 2012-05-08
Ok, this may be a simple question that I could google, but, i'de rather be accurate. I have over 150 to 200 computers on our network, and I've just began working with the I.T.Dept. aswell, however i've noticed that nearly everysingle pc has not had its fresh share of MS updates since... ??? yrs. Is it appropriate to have users log off the client pc's for the weekend and simple turn off the monitors to complete  the updates; which are set for update @ 5:30 pm when everyone is usually out of office. I guess, they will update even if they are logged off, correct?

Are you using WSUS or do you want them to auto update?
The problem with no updates in years, could mean that these are pre SP1 systems and might not be offered updates.  The other problem is that you are jumping with both legs in.  While you have 100/150 working unupdated computer, you could end up with 100/150 computers that are as useful as a paper weight.
Also 100/150 computer trying to update via windows update could grind your network feed to a crawl.

I would suggest you setup WSUS and then take a sample of the computers and using GPO/OU group them to access the WSUS.  What this will do is first let you see which updates are needed by the sample.  You can then approve the install of these updates which will get the wsus to download the various packages.  Then when the updates are applied, you can see whether the updates went through without a problem.  At this point depending on your AD layout, you can deploy the updates an OU at a time or to all remaining computers.  This is done through client targeting within the GPO/WSUS configuration.
