Problems updating MC9090 to .NET Compact Framework 2.0

Last Modified: 2013-12-21
I've just bought a second-hand Motorola MC9090-G barcode scanner on eBay 'cos I'm developing an app for a client. I'm having trouble upgrading the .Net Compact Framework to 2.0. It came with .Net CF v1.0 Service Pack 3 installed [1.0.4292.00]. When I open the netcf.cab.pkg file on the device, it reports that the update has been unsuccessful.

I notice the first screen after boot I see (white background) has BETA on it.

version nos also displayed on boot screen:
ML 1.46.295
WM 90.38.0
PM 11.27.1

I'm wondering whether the BETA means that the Windows Mobile 5.0 version I have with this unit is the beta version rather than a "proper" version of WM5. Is that the cause of my .NET CF update problems. If so, how do I resolve it? I need .NET CF v2.0 for my application.

The Settings -> System -> About screen says the following:
Windows Mobile 5.0 with the Messaging and Security feature pack

OS 5.1.477 (Build 15705.3.5.1)
(c) 1996 - 2006 Mcirosoft Corporation.
