Reinstallation of IIS and Exchange 2007 to restore OWA

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320202/en-us
I could use some clarification on the above Knowledge Base article on the reinstallation of IIS and Exchange 2007.
In the section relating to Exchange 2000 and 2003 the first three steps deal with backing up data, dismounting the mailstore and stopping Exchange services.  When it discusses Exchange 2007 those steps are omitted.
Nevermind the part about backing up data, I would do that as a matter of course because I am sufficiently paranoid, but I'm curious if there is something native in Exchange 2007 which does not require dismounting the store and stopping services.
ALSO, in Step 4 of the 2007 procedures there is an initial reference to:
{$_.OwaVersion -eq "Exchange2003or2000"} in the first command and:
-OwaVersion "Exchange2003or2000" in subsequent commands.  Is that the exact entry requirement?  What does it mean?
