Line in microphone not working on Vostro 1700 laptop

Hello,

I'm trying to get a new headphone/microphone working on my Dell Vostro 1700 laptop and am having trouble.  Everything seems fine in Device Manager (no warnings etc).  The internal mic on the laptop is working but nothing at all on the line in mic though the speakers on the headset are working great.

I went into sounds and even tried disabling the normal default microphone on top of setting my line-in set as the default but not a whisper.  Not sure how to troubleshoot!  I am using Vista Business 64-bit.  When I plugged them in to the 3.5 jack I was not prompted for anything; not sure if that is normal as I have never used a mic before!

I have a question for you, Usually with VISTA when you use the external ports such as microphone it should give you a window that displays, saying LINE IN : MICROPHONE with a sumbit or okay button at the bottom.
Well, thats what I get for getting a head of my self. My question is does that display?

Hi and thanks for the post.

No, I don't get anything at all when I plug it in.  I kind of expected it to detect it or give some indication that it was in but nothing at all.

Thank you so much for your efforts!  Straight from  your screen shots I noticed my Sound section did not say anything about Sigmatel etc.  Though not reported as broken or missing in Device Manager I did not have the proper driver installed.

Once I installed the correct driver for my Vista 64-Bit system it worked exactly as you mentioned.  In case it helps someone in future the driver was:
