At one client I have a situation where we are trying to diagnose ridiculously slow ping and download speeds but regular browsing seems to be ok. configuration of the network is:
ATT T1 line connected to a Cisco Router, I am not sure which model right now and it is under ATT's control. Router is connected to SonicWall NSA 2400 firewall, which is connected to a brand new Dell PowerConnect 2848 gb switch. There are 2 switches in the network and they are linked.
From the server (Server 2003 with AD and DNS forwarding) and any workstation I've tested ping time to the SonicWall is 1ms, ping time to the external gateway is also 1 ms. Ping time to primary external DNS averages 4ms max time is 11ms over 25 tries.
Ping time to yahoo.com averages 97ms.
DSL Reports shows upload speed 521kbs and download speed 1066kbs. Note, I don't have a quiescent network for testing. I had approx 10 users connected from an external address to Citrix when I ran the speed test.
I was attempting to download a 160mb file tonight and I was getting approx 4 - 12 kbps download speed.
I would appreciate any help to understand how to troubleshoot the slow ping and download speeds.
