insert html code via php form to mysql

I have a standard html form that submits to a php file that inserts the form data into a mysql table. This works fine as long as the data is text and does not contain any html. The problem is -- i need to be able to submit html into the column.

How do I get the html into the column?

Example: insert this string

The above works.

However, the following errors:
<p style="padding: 0px 10px;">insert this string</p>

Error Message:
Error: You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 's unexpected curve balls, forcing them to sell their house. Most have no idea w' at line 1

What is that about? The column that it is inserting into has a data type of text.
