Sharepoint Anonymous Access - 401 Unauthorized
Experts,

I have a MOSS 2007 farm - two front ends and a search.  All the machines are running 2003 Ent SP2 with the latest MOSS updates.

We have a number of internal portals that are all working, but our external website which also runs on Sharepoint and uses anonymous access has stopped working.

We you try to connect you get a single text line: 401 Unauthorized.  If we enable basic authentication in addition to anonymous the website works.

There doesn't appear to be anything usefull in any of the logs - all it reports is 401 Unauth..  there is no indication of what its trying to do when the error occurs.

Does anyone have any ideas on the cause of the problem, or how to extract some useful diagnostic information?

Thanks

did you go to the homepage of the site collection and turn on anonymous access

site actions, site settings, modfiy all site setings advanced permissions, settings, anonymous access.

I figured you all ready did this but since its not working im back to the basics

if you say it stopped working means it used to work.  I would look at your firewall or isa server and find out if something has changed in your network.  Who are the people with the issue ?  one person alot of people?  Did you guys update your ie version to the workstations?

Yes - its been working for over 6 months.

Thanks guys - the issue is affecting all users, both from outside coming in through ISA and internally when hitting the farm directly.

IE version hasn't changed and it does the same thing with Chrome/Firefox etc.

check the account that your using fo anonymous access, check the application pool as well.  you might have an account password locked out or expired.  just thinking usally thats not an issue

one more thing disable one front end and then do the other one at a time of course and see if its related to only one front end.

can they come into a subsite?

I would check your IIS website's application pool.  Make sure you have anonymous user checked on, if you're using a domain account make sure the account is set to never expires.

I would assume you did not change authentication types or settings on central admin.  For example, Kerberos / NTLS...
