Optical drives never require a driver when used in Windows XP.  The OS provides native support that allows this drive to read a data or music disk and to burn a cd-r disk.

 Please describe what the problem is and also tell me if the drive is missing from My Computer.

What does it mean to be "Always On"?

Is your cloud always on? With an Always On cloud you won't have to worry about downtime for maintenance or software application code updates, ensuring that your bottom line isn't affected.

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

 To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:
 Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
 Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:
 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro  l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

 On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
 Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:
 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro  l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

 On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
 Quit Registry Editor.NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value, if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need to reinstall that software. If the problem recurs, consult with the software vendor for assistance.

 Restart your computer.

Try removing the drive from Windows Device Manager & let windows reinstall it. Though I think it will have the same effect as mentioned in microsoft link givebn by CTaylor70
Windows + Break Key Combo will bring up the System Properties Dialog Box. On the Advanced tab click the Environment Variables Button. Under system Variables (& not User Variables) Click new and Enter DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES under Variable Name & 1 under Value. Ok out everything and Reboot.

Again Open the System Properties Dialog Box and got to Device Manager Under Hardware Tab. Under View Make sure Show Hidden Devices has been Selected.

You will see all the Ghost Devices which are installed on your System. Remove all devices related to CD Drives as in your case. They should be visible in a dimmer view.

Then Reboot & let windows detect and reinstall everything afresh.

This time Windows should be able to detect the CD Drive.

Background Question - Did you try updating the firmware of your CD Drive recently?

Ravi.

you do not need this as windows install it without a problem.
if you are having difficulties with it then use device manager and remove the device.
reboot and windows will configure it once again correctly....
