bad video card; if removeable, replace it.
another possinbility is the LCD flex cable that can be broken - try reseating it

Hi,

Are you aware if there was any damage to the screen at all?
Also, what make/model of laptop are you using? There may be a common fault with the screens,
as a couple of machines at our company have had their screens replaced twice!
Most likely it is a fault with the LCD display itself, or in the wires connecting to the machine.

Depending on if this machine is still in warranty, you could try taking it apart and checking for a good connection but this is unlikely.
Unfortunately screens are very expensive, unless you can find one on ebay or somewhere for a reasonable price.

Hello,

I can think of three possibilities

- Check if the distortion occurs during booting. That is, before any drivers are loaded. You need to look carefully. If not, it may be a faulty driver.  Try to update the video drivers.

- If distortion occurs during booting, it may be faulty graphics card. To check it further, you can take a bootable CD/DVD and boot from that, and see if the display is correct; if not, the the graphics card is gone.

- When ever the distortion is occurring, fix it to an external monitor/TV . If the distortion do not occur there, your display is gone. In your case the external monitor is working. So it seems the display is gone.

If an external monitor works as it should the problem is most likely the LCD and it will have to be replaced.

thanks guys ya in response to testez the distortion happens right off the bat as soon as you turn it on although i wouldn't say it's distorted in that you can read the screen at all but more of a random show of bright colors over the whole screen one color at a time then some white bars mixed in on the side and bottom.

How old is your laptop ?
Have you done the resetting of the cable going to the lcd ?
It could be a faulty LCD and or the back light.
