steps for adding child domain controller

I am running in a vmware environment for testing purposes. I have created a win 2003 root domain controller.
I have then created two child domain controllers, I set their primary DNS to point to the root (parent) and ran DCPROMO with no errors.

What I want to know is, at what point do I install dns on the child DC's and when do I change the primary dns server on the DC's so that they point to themselves?

Do I have to wait for some sort of replication?

Replication is basically what's happening during the promotion (along with creating new data about the new DC), so after the promotion is complete and you've rebooted, you can change the priomary DNS for the DC to point to itself if you wish.

Obviously this is dependant on you also installing the DNS component to the DC as well !

Will DNS automatically configure itself when I install it on the Child DC's?

    Accepted Solution

If you isntall the DNS component on the server before promotion, then the DNS zones will drop onto the new DC. Since DNS is (or should be) AD integrated, it is replicated as part of the AD database, and since the DC is also a DNS server, it will get the zones.

You can verify this by checking the DNS console on the server - you should see the zones appear.

Are we talking additional DCs in the same domain, or a new child domain?

    cool, makes sense.

It's a new Child DC, thank god I'm testing first.

    Thanks again for the help!
