Terminal Server Thin Client Disconnecting

Hello Everyone,

I have been dealing with this issue for quite some time now, and I am unable to figure out what is going on. Here is a little bit of background on the network:

SBS 2008 Standard 64 Bit  - SBS server, Exchange, DC, Sharepoint, file shares
Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise 32 Bit - Terminal Server
Wyse Winterm Thin Clients
3 Desktop PC's that RDP to the terminal server

Here is what is happening.

When the users arrive in the morning, they turn on the terminals. They have it figured out that when they turn on 7 of the terminals, the 8th one they turn on will disconnect. It does not automatically disconnect. All 8 can be turned on for about 10 minutes, then the screen will just freeze on 1 terminal, and it will disconnect them.

I have checked the servers for errors, and i am unable to find anything.
I have called Wyse to ask them if they have heard of this before - they said no.
I have called Microsoft, they recommended running a registry edit on the SBS box, this didnt work.

Any ideas?

Thank you!

Is your TS server licensed per machine or per user?  Is it communicating with the licensing server correctly (assumption is yes, because you said no errors in event viewer, but I hate to assume)?  Is there any sort of disconnect message on the Wyse devices?  Do the PCs play into the count of 8 connections?

Good questions.
If this does not happen to the PCs, then it is thin client related.
Couple things to try.
- Run TSCC.MSC on the TS and change the licensing to 'Per User'. Does it help?
- Locate on the Wyse website the latest firmware AND RDP Client for your thin client model and make sure you load them on your thin clients. Does it help?

Thanks for the comments.

I have not noticed any licensing issues, as they are licensed for more than what they have, which some are per device, and some are per user.

The customer would have to pay for either new terminals, or for the firmware upgrade on all the terminals, which i suggested> They do not want to do this because we cant say that it WILL work for sure.

No messages on the thin client, just that it is disconnected.

Thanks guys!

You can't have TS licensing mixed like that.  The TS Licensing server is either in User mode or Computer mode.  MS Allows a one time, license for license transfer from one to the other.  I would suggest you report to us the number of each type of license and the number of users and computers which connect to the TS environment.  We can better suggest how to proceed from there.

My next step is to change the licensing. Will microsoft issue a credit on the licenses so they are all the same? I think we have 10 per device and 5 per user. Can we "trade" the device for per user?

Thanks everyone!

You can do a one time swap at no charge.  Contact MS licensing and they will facilitate this for you.

The Licenses are all per user - another one of our tech's had changed them over and I did not realize it. Any further help would be appreciated.

How many per user licenses does your licensing server now see, 15?

I have seen this issue before and the fix was actually in the firmware. I would try upgrading one of the terminals to see if that fixes it.

I will be flashing all of the terminals with the latest firmware next week to see if it helps solve the issue. Please do not close this issue.
