We have an application that uses redmon,  a printer redirection software.  Weve gotten it to work on our 64 bit xp machines, but now after installing redmon64, when I go to install the redirected printer on win 7 (64), I select redirected printer, then rpt1:, and I get an error.   As far as I can tell there is no useful information in the error message (specified port cannot be added.  Operation could not be completed (error 0x00000001).  Thats it.

Yes, Windows XP Professional x64 Edition works. But it is not compatible with Windows 7 x32 and even less with Windows 7 x64.It can not even run on Vista x64 (even there they get the error "Specified port cannot be added. Operation could not be completed (error 0x00000001)".
So you will just have to wait for the driver.
