I have a customer with a problem.
Steam crashes during online play I have done a clean install of windows and Steam. His system is running an athalon X2 6gb of ram plenty of HDD. The graphic card was a Geforce 8800gt now it is an ATI 5750. PSU is plenty to run both. It still crashes. It should be noted though that it doesn't crash while playing offline and sometimes online plays fine. In fact after I installed the ATI the customer almost played for 2hours before crash. Any suggestions.

I would recommend doing system stability test using some standard benchmark in continuos run.
Watch the temperature meters during this run.

I doubt that has an effect it crashes at random even after first startup and does so with 2 completely different graphic cards. It also doesn't happen offline and is not effected by whether or not he is the host in Modern Warfare 2.

OK, so it NEVER happens in offline play, or with just a lower frequency?
Try to swap the drivers on the network card (if he is using windows drivers, swap to original manufacturer drivers and vice-versa).

Correct I personally played L4D2 and intentionally went for events that I know would torture the processor and graphic card (i.e. got hit by the boomer and etc.) and it didn't even hiccup and he beat the MW2 campaign offline with no crash. Yet when you run online it crashes. I will see about the nic driver though I didn't think of that it makes sense though. I think ultimately this is a steam issue even if the nic driver fix works because he played it for a long time and then wham it starts messing up one day. But this is the sad way of PC gaming I suppose pirating has made it so the gaming industry doesn't care about quality near as much as they use to so Valve could care less I am sure if their PC product is broken.

> But this is the sad way of PC gaming

Every software contains bugs (unless it is written in formally verified language [mostly nuclear power plants]).
If you think that this is a Steam issue (which I would consider unlikely) I would recommend contacting Steam support.

I apologize for my earlier animosity towards steam I have calmed down and realized that it was a ram issue that my former coworker didn't test for but claimed he did when I ran Bioshock as a test and it crashed within 5 minutes I went ahead and pulled the ram. My customer now has his system back with new ram and is completely happy. In the meantime I have spent the last week playing around with steam and I am impressed with it once I actually started to play around with it. Steam is an elegant product and a brilliant way to cut piracy down.
