I have set up a Linux machine with Samba and Poptop (VPN server) set-up. When I connect to this box with my windows laptop the laptop loses it's internet. The laptop successfully connects and I can verify that in the log files of the server so my question is how do I keep the internet up on the windows machine when connecting?

If you are using the windows built in client, as far as I understand, it is a security feature. They (MS) does not think it is a good idea for the end user to be online while they are connected to a VPN...

I have had much better luck using an open source VPN Client.

Either Shrew Soft or Hamachi (not a real VPN)

You can probably fix this by going to the properties of the VPN, Going to the Network Tab, Clicking o the TCP/IP Properties (don't uncheck the box - just highlight it), click on Properties, Click on Advanced, and then on the IP Settings tab (should be on this one by default), uncheck the box that says "Use default gateway on remote network"

Select OK, Apply, etc.. to get back out of that and try to connect to the VPN again.  By default Windows sets up a PPTP connection to do this and that in turns attempts to route all of your outging Internet traffic through your VPN.  Changing this setting will allow your VPN traffic to hit the internal network and your external traffic to go out through your internet and not through the VPN.

Good Luck!
