Re-Emerge Apache with prefork.c instead of worker.c

Hello

I have a Gentoo box with Apache installed on it. Its currently compiled with worker.c

apache2ctl -l
Compiled in modules:
core.c
prefork.c
http_core.c
mod_so.c

I want to user emerge to recompile it with prefork.c instead

Whats the easiest/best way to do this?

I am not opposed to uninstalling and reinstalling apache

Hi,

I think

sudo APACHE2_MPMS="prefork" emerge apache -pv

should compile Apache with the prefork MPM

Have a look here: http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/apache/doc/upgrading.xml#doc_chap4

Looks good - I will try it soon

what do the p and v flags on emerge do?

d4011Commented:
The -p is short for --pretend, which means that emerge displays all what he would do. So you can see all changes without applying them. (If you are fine with the changes you leave out the p and he will start compiling)
-v is short for --verbose, which tells emerge to display some useful information. For example the used USE flags and which USE flags changed etc.

Is this what we are looking for?

APACHE2_MPMS="prefork" emerge apache -pv

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Do you need the Berkeley DB support in you LDAP?
If not, please use USE="-berkdb" and your ldap should compile fine.

jculkincysAuthor Commented:
I don't think I do

Where do I put USE="-berkdb"?
0

d4011Commented:
It should look like that:
APACHE2_MPMS="prefork" USE="-berkdb" emerge apache

(use the -p to check if the flag is gone)

And do you need LDAP support in your Apache?
If not, you can leave out the openldap package:
APACHE2_MPMS="prefork" USE="-ldap" emerge apache -v

(use the -p to make sure that emerge will not compile the openldap package)

Thanks

Couldn't I also just install Berkeley DB too?

Whats the best way to check what version of it is installed (if any)

d4011Commented:
Sorry, but I have no experience with Berkeley DB.
I can just see that there is a problem with openldap and bdb, so my suggestion was to leave that out if you dont need that.

If you can wait till Sunday/Monday i will try to reproduce the scenario.

d4011Commented:
i forgot:

if bdb is installed and if which version you will see it here:
emerge sys-libs/db -pv

From the man page:
In the printout, N = new, U = updating, R = replacing, F = fetch  restricted, B = blocked by an already installed package, D = possible downgrading, S = slotted install.

Cool

It looks like it wasn't installed

emerge sys-libs/db -v

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild  NS   ] sys-libs/db-4.8.24 [4.2.52_p2-r1, 4.3.29-r2] USE="-doc -java -nocxx -tcl -test" 22,364 kB

I get an error I get when I try to install it

Attached in the code section is the output of the command your suggested

server~ # emerge sys-libs/db -v

i can't reproduce that error. it has something todo with libtool, but what is causing the error is beyond my knowledge. sorry.
maybe there are some other linux/gentoo users around here who can help with that.
