How to block mail.yahoo.com chat web based (not yahoo messanger?)

We have users on our corporate network that access personal mail from mail.yahoo.com but also have some kind of chat on there also.

This chat is web based (not using yahoo messanger's standalone program).

How can i block this ?

You can use OPenDNS to block online chat programs like google chat and yahoo chat. It's a DNS based filter and works quite well. You would have to set it up so that everyone is using the opendns DNS servers to resolve names in some way.

OpenDNS.com has more information about it.

You can also use a firewall to block the unwanted websites on your corporate network

I don't think that would work very well, at least not with a standard firewall. Standard firewalls block based on IP only, they don't do dynamic blocking of FQDN's. More than likely, the mail.yahoo.com domain references several different IP's, so you'd have to block each IP in the group. If you did have a firewall that will block an entire FQDN, then you'd run into the issue of not being able to get to that domain at all, including the ability to check your email from yahoo. That might end up being too restrictive.

After further research it doens't appear like there is a easy way to block just the chat part of sites like gmail chat, yahoo chat etc without blocking the entire domain (i.e mail.yahoo.com or gmail.com)

there are some solutions that require hardware (Firebox Firewall's for example).

while the solution doesn't work for my needs, after further research i found out there was no real (easy) solution.

i cannot block yahoo chat without blocking yahoo etc without a hardware firewall or something to filter that traffic (Watchguard Fireboxes for example allow access to gmail but will block gmail chat if needed, and same with yahoo.. allow mail.yahoo.com etc but disable yahoo chat.)
