Windows Vista Hangs After Entering User Credentials

To make a long story a shorter story, Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium. The laptop hung after entering logon credentials. I thought maybe it was a problem with start up items so I booted to save mode and removed startup items one at a time in hopes that was the problem. Well after going through them all the problem persisted.

So I decided I'd reformat and restore back to factory settings. Following factory restore, set username and password, boom login okay. I updated the mcafee antivirus, login okay. I installed the first set of 79 patches, login not okay.

I know I may have to take the longer path here and uninstall those patches one at a time until i find the culprit, however, I'm wondering if there is some other workaround to determine exactly which patch it is without reloading this guy again. Any help would be appreciated.

Most probably the one creating the problem is the McAfee..... Since you just reinstalled.....Do it again but this time do not install the McAfee yet.... if all the patches go through without a problem, try installing the Free AVG in the meantime while you monitor the system for a problem.....

I agree with the removal of McAfee - use the Mcafee removal tool and see if slowness persists.
McAfee Removal Tool --> http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe
D/L and save to desktop.  RIGHT-click on mcpr.exe, select "Run as Admin".  Upon completion, re-boot.  Reset Windows Firewall.  Install anti--virus of your choice - no 3rd party firewall.  I favor ESET NOD32 --> http://www.eset.com/download/free_trial_download.php
or AVG 9 FREE --> http://download.cnet.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10320142.html?part=dl-10044820&subj=dl&tag=button&cdlPid=11014801
How does system perform in SAFEMODE w/. Networking?

It's not McAfee. My shop normally brings in 5-7 computers a week. Very small shop. Last night another Dell Inspiron 1501 came in with the same problem. I've just received word another computer came in with the same problem. I'll update this evening once I've had a chance to diagnose and determine what they all have in common.

I would then suggest that you take a quick look at the Reliability Monitor on a few of the systems to see if possibly the same update(s) came in prior to the trouble beginning

A little of all solved it. I actually went with AVG free, reloaded vista. The hang up was .net 3.5

AxiomEmp123: thank for the feedback.
How did you finally determine that the hang up was caused by .net 3.5 if it was not letting you login? I'm guessing that you finally managed to log in by doing a clean install again.... Again, guessing ... you did all the updates and installed AVG.... what I haven't guessed yet is to .net part. I'm just asking for the record in case someone else needs it in a future question.

Clean reload. When attempting to update patches, noticed extraordinary hang up time on .net 3.5. Cancelled the .net 3.5 update, installed several patches after, then came back and installed 3.5 and it worked. Same method on all 3 machines. Did not load AV until after patch updates were complete. Whereas the first time AV was installed prior to running patch updates.

Weird..... I have seen it happen occasionally on a clean install .... but consistently? Weird. Especially interesting that it happens on all 3 machines...
Thank you for the feedback. Hopefully it will be useful to someone with the same issue.

If I recall, all 3 machines had manufacturer restore disks pre vista sp1.
