I'm trying to use this jquery galleryview plugin: http://appleton.me/galleryview/.

Everything works fine accept for the top image does nto fade in/out (it just appears) unless I remove the doctype which I can not do. If I remove it, it will mess up the page layout & the entire site (the doctype is part of the master page).

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">

I believe the problem lies within one of the javascript files or script on the page:

<script src="http://appleton.me/wp-content/themes/appleton.me 1.6/js/jquery.js"></script>
<script src="http://appleton.me/wp-content/themes/appleton.me 1.6/js/jquery.galleryview-2.0-pack.js"></script>
<script src="http://appleton.me/wp-content/themes/appleton.me 1.6/js/jquery.timers-1.1.2.js"></script>
<script src="http://appleton.me/wp-content/themes/appleton.me 1.6/js/jquery.easing.1.3.js"></script><!-- This is optional !-->
<link rel="stylesheet" href="http://appleton.me/wp-content/themes/appleton.me 1.6/css/galleryview.css" type="text/css" />
                  panel_width: 800,
                  panel_height: 300,
                  frame_width: 50,
                  frame_height: 50,
                  transition_speed: 350,
                  easing: 'easeInOutQuad',
                  transition_interval: 0

fading of images does not work at all in IE8 strict mode.
works fine in other browsers.
also works when IE8 is in compatibility view mode.

use X-UA-Compatible meta tag to make IE8 render the page in compatibility mode.

add this tag to the <head> section of your page, making sure it is added BEFORE any js and stylesheets:
<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE7" />
