SQL SERVER 2008 EXPRESS query with CONTAINS

SQL SERVER 2008 EXPRESS EDITION:

trying to initiate this sql statement...

I have the full text catalog and index created.

use RichTextTest
SELECT [ITEM], [RICHTEXT]
  FROM RichText_test
WHERE CONTAINS (RICHTEXT, ' "Ballast" ')

query executes but returns nothing
I have at least 15 records that have the word "BALLAST" in it ?

Kindly confirm whether your database is CASE INSENSITIVE or not because CASE Sensitiveness might bring these kind of results..

Run this to get your Current Collation

SELECT DATABASEPROPERTYEX ( ur_db_name, 'Collation' )

remove the extra quote marks

i.e.

SELECT [item].[richtext]
FROM RichText_test
WHERE CONTAINS (richtext, 'Ballast')
SELECT item.richtext
FROM RichText_test
WHERE CONTAINS (richtext, 'Ballast')

Also here is an addin for SQL Server Management Studio allows you to manage your fulltext catalogs easily. It even works for SQL Server Express editions, so now you can use a nice GUI instead of using SQL commands.

http://fulltextmanager.codeplex.com/

Try making sure that the Full-Text catalog has been populated
