Cisco Router Needs Constant Reboot

Hello,
i have a cisco 1841 router which stops functioning sporadically. You have to manually go do hard reboot on the router before it starts working properly.
When it goes down you cannot ping its internal interface(from the LAN side)  nor its Public interface.
it seems to go down quite regularly.

where do i start to diagnose, is it hardware failure, or configuration issue?
nothing has  changed as far as the any configuration goes,lately.

please advise

 Since you have 2 ethernet interfaces if you are not using both currently configure your 2nd interface and see if you are still expierencing the problem.  if your eth interface is bad when that has a problem you're not going to be able to get through to the wan interface.   Are you seeing any errors on your eth interface? What is your eth interface connected to? Could be the cable from your switch/firewall to the router the eth interface or the router itself.

You can also open a TAC case and request them to RNA the router.  You will need a smartnet contract.

Hi,

Before you send it to RMA please upgrade the IOS to the latest.....

Please put the router CF flash card and copy the crash files to your computer card reader, delete the old IOS, and copy the new IOS, and try it...

You should console in to the rtr and check logs, check cup, check any kind of loop

I would also upgrade ios as per above by ikalmar

with respect to updating i need assistance with finding appropriate image to download.

bsohn: how can i check for loop in the router? is there a command which will show this?

please bear in mind this is a production router and everything depends on this. Also my level of expertise with Cisco Router is not that great.
So please point out potential pitfalls in whatever steps you advise me on.

The hung router can be caused many different issues, including a software bug,
or a temporary high CPU utilization, or even a virus on PC attached to lan segment.

If the updated software doesn't fix it you'll probably want to configure a syslog server to better debug the issue.

free Syslog Daemon, which you can install on any Windows machine:

Kiwi Syslog Daemon
http://www.kiwisyslog.com

On your router, you would the issue the global command 'logging x.x.x.x', where x.x.x.x is the IP address of the machine where the
syslog daemon is installed.

after running for 2 weeks on the new image everything has stabalized. so the new image did the trick.

qazza61 thank you for the Syslog Daemon i m sure this will help out in the future and anyone else reading this post.
