ESX 4, wich CPU Model fits best

We´re planning to set up an additional ESX Cluster running vSpere4. We want to use HP blades in an C7000 enclosure. We are now comparing blade variations, the BL490c G6 with 2 Intel Xeon E5540 2,53 GHz Quad CPUs and the BL495 G6 with 2 AMD Opteron 2435 2,5GHz Hexacore CPUs. I am not really into AMD CPUs.

Wich CPU type should I choose?  The Intel with the better per core performance, or the AMD with plus of 2 cores per CPU?  Is the AMD Choosing the AMD CPU will save more than 1k Euro per Server. What is the general difference betwwen these 2 CPUs?

Thanks for the quick reply.

But this is for a completly new cluster so we wont get any compatibility issues. I just want to know wich CPU Type gives me more performance for the Cluster.

Thanks

Hmmm...its hard to tell, depending on cpu model & speed ofcoz but I'd go for cpu with extra cores and better per core performance

Just to add the extra core is quite important becoz of the limitation of vCPU per physical core but this also depends on load

If you are sure you are not ever going to get into the situation where VM's running on the AMD server would need to be vMotioned (while they are running) to Intel based, server, I would go with the AMD. Not only are they cheaper , they are faster too!

And I say this as a guy that comes from a shop that only uses intel processors.

What the heck did I just write ... Intel is faster but from a price point of view AMD is much cheaper and you get virtually identical performance so for that I would go AMD ... but since we only use Intel ... I would buy Intel!

The Intel 5540 still beats the AMD 2435 cpu: http://techreport.com/articles.x/17005  Where the AMDs do well is in low power consumption, but when it comes to raw power, the Intels dominate.  See also http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html, which are benchmarks sent in by actual users.
