SSH into home computer

Dear Experts,

Is it possible to some how securely connect to my home computer?

Looks like using x over ssh to remote into a full desktop like gnome is not a good idea over the internet because it is too slow.

Is there a better open to log into a full desktop over the internet?  Needs to be fast and low bandwidth.
