iis 7 setup to use dns cnames

We're running iis 7 on a server 2008 let's call it webserver.xxx.edu

We have several cnames set up in our dns that all point to webserver.xxx.edu, call them web1, web2, etc.

I have an application on webserver.xxx.edu called web1 which I can access by going to webserver.xxx.edu/web1, but I would like to use the cname so I can access it via web1.xxx.edu

I've tried to do this by creating a site called web1, but it objects by saying that I cannot have more than one site with a binding to port 80.  I don't want to make users do web1.xxx.edu:port, so is there a way I can have multiple sites on one server all looking at port 80 (or port 443).

You have to add host alias to resolve this issue. Do the following steps:

* Right Click on website -> Edit Bindings -> Click on Add -> Select IP address -> Port 80 -> Host Name: domain.com

* Right Click on website -> Edit Bindings -> Click on Add -> Select IP address -> Port 80 -> Host Name: www.domain.com

Now you can use Single IP on every website.

You cannot have the IP, port and host header/binding the same. Hence why you are getting the message.

Like tanujchandna said you can setup multiple binding per site.

Or setup multiple sites if that is what you need and have different IP/binding info in one site. Your IP and port will be the same. :)

I could only get it to work by setting up multiple sites.
