Outlook 2003 - working OFFLINE and no Work Offline menu item

Posted on 2009-12-18

I have a laptop (XP SP3) running Outlook 2003 that is running in OFFLINE mode and the user needs to manually select SEND/RECEIVE to collect the email from the Exchange 2003 server.  They also do not have a "Work Offline" menu item on the File menu.
Note: This laptop WAS using "cached mode" but that was recently disabled.  This user is currently remote to the Exchange server but is connected through a VPN (SBS 2003).

Anyone with suggestions to get Outlook into Online mode?

Also, why is the Work Offline menu item missing?

Try creating a new Outlook profile, if that fixes it you can try renaming the old OST to whatever the new profile is looking for to avoid a full resync - although in doing so you might bring the problem back, so just rename rather than delete the new OST whilst you try that so you can go back to it if necessary.

Forget my comments about the OST, you aren't using cached mode anymore!

Outlook is NOT using "cached mode" at this time - should not even be looking at an OST.   Somewhat confused on your suggestion...

    Accepted Solution

Through further research, I have found the somewhat simple answer to my problem - just didn't know where to look:
    1) Right-Click on Mailbox xxxusernamexxx in the left All Mail Folders area and choose Properties for Mailbox&..
    2) Click Advanced& button.
    3) Select Advanced tab.
    4) Click Offline Folder File Settings& button.
    5) Click the Disable Offline Use button Click YES button to the &. Do you want to continue? message.
    6) Restart Outlook
Menu item "Work Offline" is back and can work online when connected.
